Vladimir Asriev, the originator and director of UKRAINIANART.COM
' has been an art collector, art dealer and art consultant since 1974.
In 1976, to the great annoyance of the Odessa (Ukraine) KGB he issued
"Catalogue of the Collection of Vladimir Asriev". This included about
100 artworks, representative of almost every non-conformist Odessa artist.
During this period, he was also behind many private exhibitions of non-conformist
artists, including an exhibition of Ukrainian Contemporary Paintings,
showing their works at his "unofficial gallery" - his flat in the city
centre. Inspite of continuous harassment and threats from the Soviet authorities
during the 1970s, he managed to keep his flat an open house for local
artists, musicians and poets. Since moving to England in 1980, Asriev
has been behind many exhibitions of Russian and Ukrainian art. In 1989
he set up his own London gallery - the "Red Square Gallery", where he
staged many successful shows of major Russian and Ukrainian artists (closed
1992). He is one of the leading art consultants in the field of Soviet
and post-Soviet art as well as Soviet Non-Conformist art in England today.
